Diamonds

from Jack Casually by Peter Hazen

/

lyrics

Diamonds round her neck and on her chandelier
the doorman hollers up to tell her that i'm here
in the 80s we thought we'd all be rich forever
20 years later i can't say we know much better

imploringly bored she feeds her face with grapes
in her mind she deliberately debates
which dress would look better on TV
should the paparazzi press be out tonight

and i wonder if she's bored with me
it seems like she's bored with everything
and i realize that its me
that's bored with this whole situation

(my luxurious life is like creative constipation)

pearls round her neck and pearls in her eyes
her detachment and disdain are thinly disguised
i wonder what's behind her lack of surprise
my discontent has grown distinctly crystallized
like coal taking the shape of a diamond

diamonds round her neck and on her chandelier
she wears me casually like i'm not even here
my discontent has grown distinctly crystallized
like a coal taking the shape of a diamond
